Pinyon Reforestation
Wildfires and drought die-offs are leading to loss of single-leaf pinyon pine across its range. PiCCA is working to support tribal-led efforts (including the Big Pine Paiute, Washoe, and Tubatulabal tribes) to propagate and reforest pinyon pine.

At the UC Berkeley greenhouse, a research team is propagating seeds collected from across the range of single-leaf pinyon pine. This will allow us to develop better propagation methods and better understand under what conditions different populations of pinyon pine thrive in.

There’s an increasing need to propagate pinyon pine for reforestation. But propagation comes with challenges, and there’s limiited information available on best practices. The PiCCA team has been leading pinyon pine propagation efforts and has put together a user-friendly propagation manual, which is continuously growing and evolving as we learn more information — find it here on our website. We have also put together a pinyon propagation workshop and have developed a listserve where everyone can share challenges and success. Get in touch here if you would like to learn more about pinyon propagation!

Pinyon pine recovery following high severity wildfires is severely limited and requires active reforestation efforts. PiCCA is providing seedlings and planting and monitoring support for reforestation projects across the region, from the Pine Nut Hills, Nevada to Kern Valley, California.
